Is a proxy server necessary for Yacy, or is it not absolutely necessary?

You can use one - so it’s your decision.

I’m running YaCy without a proxy but I provide showing the entered search using my YaCy as proxy (only avaiable if you enable this option to other users)

So you can set or use it as you want :smiley:
